Re: quartz vs. automatic
: Go for quartz. It will be cheaper. It will be more accurate. It will need little or no servicing. I have owned quartz watches since 1970. I have about 10 quartz watches and three automatics, two of which are new. None of the quartz watches have ever been repaired and are running like new. The auto, my favorite, has had hundreds of dollars spent on maintenance. I still wish that this favorite (Omega Speedy 125) had been quartz. One other point....if you own more than one watch it is better if they are quartz. You don't have to reset them everytime you want to wear it. My auto's are a real pain in that respect.
Thanks for the recent posting on deciphering the model
: numbers. That was extremely helpful. I have now decided to
: buy the Professional size diver but I am still undecided on
: quartz vs. automatic. This will be my primary watch which I
: will wear both casually and semiformally. I am very active
: and can be hard on a watch. At the same time, I have been
: very impressed with the action of an automatic watch and I
: feel if I am paying the money for a Swiss watch I should
: get "Swiss movement". The bottom line is how
: careful do you have to be with the automatic watches and
: will I be disappointed in the long run with a quartz,
: especially if I want to hand it down to my kids one of
: these days.
