I think the SMP appears so huge because of its flat case and the shape of the bezel. The crystal itself, for example, is exactly the same diameter as the crystal of my Submariner clone, and the SMP is just a little bit larger.
The full-size SMP in general, and the 2531.80 in particular are designed to look _huge_, but they aren't really that big. Let the experience settle in a bit. There's nothing wrong about going to the jeweller for 2-3 times. In fact, I did just that before I finally pulled the trigger.
I've also had a salesperson trying to talk me into a Speedmaster Reduced, clearly because I had signaled that I'm on a budget. Don't listen to them, they may only want to close _any_ deal with you, especially considering the current state of the economy around the world. Bring your wife or a friend with you, that's a lot more objectivity already.
