hi, i don't have an opinion on whether you should get a smpc or gmt, but i think some excellent advice i read everywhere is just to buy whatever watch you end up getting with the steel bracelet. if you end up getting the watch with only the rubber strap and decide you want to try the steel bracelet later it will cost a whole lot more $$ just to buy the bracelet.
the double ridged strap only comes on one type of clasp-the divers deployment. there is another type of omega single fold clasp that looks really good but it doesn't take a double ridged strap. whatever one you end up getting you'll love it, they are great watches.
