Re: Refurbish 1950's Seamaster
In Response To: Re: Refurbish 1950's Seamaster ()

Even the central service station in Switzerland can't help sometimes! I thought i'd save myself some aggrivation and inquired FIRST of them if they sould supply a new 18k rose gold case back for my 1961 vintage Constellation de Luxe with the cal.551 mvt. (the mirrored 18k rose gold outer edge dial AKA "Grand Luxe" except the mirrored section is smooth and doesn't have the machined lines in the mirrors).

The case back had developed a fine split from about center of the back to the outer edge and even thru a case opening cut out and threads. It appears to be a manufacturing defect (possibly incomplete mixing of the alloy?) I suspect it had pretty much always been there, as it is very fine and might have passed inspection of a less than alert employee!

The case back includes the numbers "14381/2" , and directly below that is "SC-1". If anyone has a junked case with a good 18k rose back for sale..... let me know.

Anyway........Omega in Switzerland didn't have another available. Seems to me they should be able and willing to manufacture another of proper structure integrity.......since they GOOFED on the original and it does have their name all over it!!!!

Then again.......as in rare coins.........i have a mint made error!

: *Which* Omega service center did you send it
: to? The USA center in Lancaster, PA often
: says that about watches. But somehow the
: same watch sent to the central service
: center in Switzerland gets fixed. Go figure.
