In our current world when highly accurate quartz watches can be had for $10, the purchase of a fine mechanical watch requires both desire and committment.
Hand wound watches have to be wound regularly. A non COSC Speedy will most likely be far less accurate than any 'modern' watch. You may likely restrict its use somewhat in fear of affecting the finish or the movement of an expensive watch. You can't dive with it. Periodic services will definitely be much more expensive.
If you want this Speedy you must buy in in spite of (or perhaps because of) these limitations. The fact that your considering the Eco-Drive and touting the benefits of modern watch technology leads me to feel that you may not be ready to make the kind of time and personal committment that a fine mechanical watch requires.
Most people I know don't want to think about their watches. They want to put on their watch, take it off and leave it off for three days, not worry about positioning and finally put it back on and have it be extremely accurate. If that level of convenience and accuracy has overriding importance to you, you may want to stay away from mechanicals.
However, if you can't live without getting a Speedy or other fine mechanical, welcome to the club.
: Hi Cyberland;
: I have always had a soft spot in my heart for
: the heritage and quality of Omega. I have
: the opportunity to by an early 70's
: Speedmaster, a watch I always wanted. But,
: for the same amount of money I can buy a
: modern watch. The best technology in new
: watches appears to be the Citizen Titanium
: Eco-Drive. On a purely technical basses it
: is far superior. I love the history of the
: Speedmaster and it's proven quality, I would
: be uncomfortable using and abusing it in
: daily ware and tare. At this stage it would
: be a functional watch not just a show piece.
: I need a push to make this purchase.
