When you get the Tag back, unscrew the crown & pull the crown out, this should "stop" the watch & will prolong the battery life enormously.
Next , I have made some assumptions. 1, you only have 1 child. 2, he is not an out & out bummer.
Let him sweat a bit. Make him wait a while (I'm talking about a couple of years here). See if his interest wains for the watch or if he really wants it. Why not give it to him for his 18th or passing some college exams etc etc.

I got a Seiko for my 18th. I still have it ( 23 years later) it looks like almost new & from the masses of watches that I have ( of which about 20 are Omegas) it is the ONLY watch I will never sell. I has a special meaning for me.
Make the TAG that special for your son & you'll both be happy.
