Re: Speedmaster moonphase

Well, I'm curious why the owner has questions. Did he buy it real cheap?

Here's some info on Speedmaster Moonphase models:
http://home.xnet.com/~cmaddox/speedmaster_moonphase.html.

But based on that photo, I'm really torn on whether to declare it real or fake. The main details that are usually wrong on fakes are right on this piece - case finishing details, crown and bracelet.

It has all the look of a somewhat older model. The hands are thinner and lack the phosphorescent line down the middle. Plus all the Speedmaster moonphases I know of have the moon on the top dial. But those are all possible to attribute to it possibly being a model from 10-20 years ago.

What still triggers my fake-o-meter are that it is extraordinarily unusual for Omega to *not* put Speedmaster on the dial.

Yet that is an extremely highly complicated watch for a maker of fakes to tackle. If all those complications really work (can you actually set the moonphase dial?), I can't imagine it being a fake.

For comparison, here's a genuine Omega Triple Date: http://www.we-sale.com/Edward/pics/Omega.htm. Your piece looks just like this, but with the supposed moon dial added.

So my vote is that unless this is a somewhat older model that I was completely unaware of, it must be an unexpectedly good fake.
