Omega Speedmaster, How water resistant is it?

Hi,

I have a Speedmaster day-date model (3523.80.00).

How water resistant is it? I know it is rated for 30M/100ft but what does that really mean.

I never go diving but I do go swimming on a regular basis.

Am I right to assume that I can leave the watch on when I swim?
