No particular "function," just an alternative design with different advantages versus other strap types.
- it is comfortable, especially in hot weather
- absolutely no problems getting it wet from perspiration, rain, swimming or using it diving at any depth
- easily changable, since you don't have to take the springbars out to switch to another of the same type strap
- if one springbar fails, the watch still stays attached to your wrist instead of falling off your arm
- extra strap loop prevents watch from sliding off the strap when handling the watch (off your wrist) like it can on a plain nylon strap
- easy to wash by hand or simply throw in the washing machine with your clothes
- has extra length so it can quickly adapt to being worn over a sleeve or diving suit
- inexpensive, so easy to have several colors to swap between or always have a freshly washed one handy
