I've had my x 33 for about 2 years and the hands blocking the LCD readout has never been an issue for me. I don't feel that the operation is any more difficult that any other watch out there. Once you've worn the watch daily, for a period of time, the functions of the buttons become second nature. I'm assuming the 'Speedmaster' is the 'Moon Watch' or one of its derivatives, and in that case I can't argue the Moon Watch has more 'character' than the x 33. I like the functionality of my x 33, the backlight and alarm are second to none. The x 33 is not by any means a 'pretty watch', but in terms of providing information clearly and succinctly it can't be beat. You can think of the differences as 'Old School' vs. 'New School' or the venerable question, automatic vs. quartz.
My 2 cents...
