You CAN'T overwind it. All modern automatic watches have overwind protection -- that's how they keep it from overwinding itself.

Yes, that does have to do with the date change. Changing the date close to the time the date would automatically change may push the date change gear out of alignment. While it usually does not break anything -- it can. More often, it simply alters the exact time that the date changes -- usually FURTHER from midnight.
