Link Orientation

Can anyone say what is the generally accepted rule for an uneven number of links and which side, 6 or 12, gets the uneven amount. I have a speedmaster style bracelet and a comforatbale fit for me is 5 full links per side plus one 1/2 link. On which side should I place the 1/2 link.
