The slide section opens up the bracelet wider to be able to get your hand through. Most people's hands will not scrunch (scrunch is a technical term) as small as their wrist.

I actually bought an Omega foldover deployant once that, when sized properly to my wrist, I could not get my hand through. I ended up giving the clasp away to a friend.
