I find that it also depends on the manufacturer and their own recomendations. I have followed Omega's recommendations when it comes to my own watches with no problems. I use my Speedmaster professional for the usual showering, swimming, but will not free dive with it. For fairly deep free diving and even deeper scuba I use the Seamaster Pro. No problems ever with either. Then again, these are Omega recommendations for their watches. As for other watches, I do not know.
