Well.....can't say i agree with you on this one. Why creat and continue to market a watch that has a feature nobody ever uses? It certainly increases the cost at least a little, and reminds me of the old expression about the practicality of "teets on a Bull".
I suspect the popularity of the Omega SMP has more to due with the "other" choice being quite a bit more expensive rather than the majority of owners really liking the looks of the feature.....as you seem to.
I even owned a SMP once, but bought it more because of the excellent used price of $800 for a dead mint example. Wore it for about 6 months until i got a nice 60's 18K Connie and Omega heavy woven band that looks great and hefts out at 140 grams total! Later sold the SMP to a fellow employee (at my cost as he was a friend also).......and he later tired of it and sold it on ebay for about $900.
.......if Omega ever does come out with a SMP sans the helium valve.......i'd be a buyer as i don't currently have a water watch. But for now my choice would still be for a Rolex Submariner two-tone with blue dial.....which i also once owned but sold for at $100 less than my cost of $4,400 on ebay when i needed a car more. Pretty good deal as i wore it a solid year and got out at what i consider whole. Still prefer the Rolex "look" on this type of water watch.
.....in any case....i only buy "used" models,(to allow someone else to take the depreciation "hit"), so if Omega ever does produce one i'll wait until it appears 2nd hand at a good price!
......now if Rolex could ever make a really solid band like on the SMP.......THAT was a feature i really liked from Omega on this one!

: Well considering that almost no one actually
: need the HRV trying to sell to the few
: people who do would be a big waist of omegas
: time.
: I'm sure the great majority or people who buy
: the sea dweller buy it because they like it
: better for whatever reason (no mag over the
: date, Thicker watch) not because the are
: exploring the oceans floor.
: As for the look of the HRV on the SMP, I like
: the look of it a lot. It's one of the things
: that first caught my eye when looking at
: watches. But from what you say below it
: sounds like you really have your finger on
: the pulse of the Omega community. Though it
: is king of a funny statement considering the
: full size SMP is Omega's best seller.
: Imagine all those people buying a watch with
: a extra valve that they don't like...
