I think it is mostly marketing differentiation. While we collectors and experts might know the difference, remember that 98% of luxury watch buyers are Average Joes who are easily swayed by trivial or seemingly-important differences. This one has a COSC certification -- so it "must" be better on accuracy. This one has a HRV, so it "must" be the better diving watch. This one costs more, so it "must" be the better investment.
All of these are emotional reactions to the attributes -- because buyers seldom have enough information to make a truly clear, logical, informed choice. Otherwise, they would be aware that the COSC standard of perfection is fairly mediocre and severely outdated, that the HRV really is as useful as 'teats on a bull' and that price alone is not a reliable measure of value in luxury items.
