Well, it appears as you have plenty of reasons to NOT get a chronograph so it seems as though you are set.
I am wearing my first mechanical chronograph (the Seamaster ACC). I absolutely love it. I have yet to time anything life-threatening important with it. I usually time "fun" things that are just fun to know (driving time, time it takes to get to class, flight time, etc).
One of the main reasons I got a chronograph in the first place is because I'll be off to pilot training in a year or so and heard that if I had to pick between the GMT or Chrono, get the Chrono. While the cockpits have timers, you never know when it might go out or when you might want to time something else while in flight.
You seem really bent on the second hand. If this really bothers you, you can always start the second hand when the sub-dial reaches 0 so they are in sync with each other. Therefore, you'll have the sweeping seconds hand. Not sure why you hate the sub-dial seconds but since you do, there's the fix for you.
