Not at all.

No. They just keep it running. But there is no evidence that they do any mechanical benefit. Anything you hear about keeping the watch lubricated is baloney -- modern watch oils (for the last 50+ years) do not coagulate or pool.

Some people believe a winder may cause extra wear, but there is no real evidence for that either.
