I have owned several watches with chronographs and have never used them. I agree with you that the second hand being in a sub-dial takes away from the enjoyment of owning an automatic watch. I like to see that long sweeping second hand moving around the dial.
I also can't see spending an extra $1000 or so for the feature. If you are into sports and need to time someone, you can buy a stopwatch with easier to use, larger buttons, or buy a cheap Casio sports watch.
