That's what you get for trying only a British dictionary. Zowie is an America-originated word!
The origin is as a word with equivalent meaning to "wow" and it was coined and popularized in the 1920s. It is based on the doppler-shifted sound of a car going by fast: zzzzzz-ow-ieeeeeee.
