I disagree, I think a chance to purchase a thousand dollar watch isn't squandering, its an opportunity to learn about ones self. No one on their deathbed ever said 'Gee Im glad I didn't buy that gift for myself' I have learned more from taking action whether right or wrong, than I ever have from putting something off, or deciding not to take action.
I say if it teaches you about yourself, go for it!
