They are a little expensive for what you get, but because there's nothing else like them, well that makes us all a captive market for them. I really like the 44mm Luminor Marina Hand-wound version because it doesn't have that annoying date bubble. They are too tricky to compare to Omega and Rolex because they look so different. Internally, there's nothing special to them. The auto is an ETA and the hand-wound is a Unitas. I think they are adjusted to Chronometer specs, but I'm not sure.
I would love to get one someday, but, like a Rolex, you could get a second-hand Panerai in very good condition and save some serious dollars since the designs of both these brands have barely changed in decades.
With Panerai, stick to the classics like the Luminor Marinas. Everything else is just a hybrid. Their GMTs and chronos have better alternatives by other brands out there.
Just my 2c.

P.S.-the box you get with a Panerai is outstanding. Better than most of the furniture in my house!
