Derek, I have read somewhere that the self-winding mechanisms of automatic watches were designed for them being very slowly wound (i.e. continuously during the 12-16 hours of normal wear each day), thus winding them manually, giving them the same "amount" of winding in a minute or two, would damage the "gear train"?

Where does this come from and is there any truth to it, as far as you know?
