Actually, I don't think Derek was trying to start a quartz vs. automatic debate at all. He was merely trying to point out the pros and cons of each and to reiterate the fact that neither movement is really what makes a high end watch cost so much.
You may not view watches as jewelry, but that IS what they are. You're paying for the all stainless steel, gold, titanuim, etc. bracelets and cases, the sapphire crystals, and numerous other parts as well as the movement inside the watch.
Granted, an automatic movement is more complex than a quartz movement, which is why it costs a few hundred dollars more. Still, if you were to compare, for example, a Bond SMP in quartz and automatic, everything is basically the same except the movement, and the auto sells for $400 more. You are still getting the same bracelet, clasp, bezel, crystal, etc. whether you buy the auto or the quartz version. Thus, if you are concerned with whether you are getting a high quality quartz watch when you buy a quartz Omega, the answer is yes. However, the bulk of the cost is not related to the movement itself. I hope that makes sense.
