: I've been considering an SMP auto, but I'm not
: sure if it wouldn't be better for me to just
: get a quartz SMP, especially considering the
: costs for servicing an auto every few years.
Realize that with a quartz, you also have a *mandantory* battery change every 2-3 years. If you do the proper thing and also have the gaskets replaced, you are looking at a $60 or more service. Service on an auto is about $120, but you can easily go 5-7 years -- needing to service it earlier only if it shows signs of a problem.
So it is questionable whether your total costs for routine service on a quartz is really that much less than for an auto.
: I know Breitling has upgraded their quartz
: movements used in the Colt models to the
: Chronometer Certified Super Quartz, and am
: wondering how the Omega quartz movements
: compare?
OMEGA quartz movements are excellent. The reports I get are that they are great at being within 1 or 2 seconds a *month*.
Breiting does have an edge on everybody else with their SuperQuartz movements. Though it is not as if the added accuracy of the SuperQuartz is really helpful in the real world. Fun, yes. But if a regular high-quality quartz like an OMEGA stays within 15-30 seconds a year, what more do you really need!
So ultimately, I would still go with whichever watch you liked overall the most. Especially since Breitling and OMEGA watches have very different style to them.
