Sounds like a strange one! If the problem had just shown up (and not having been sent in for service with a similiar problem returning),......then i'd say the problem was probably a coil of the hairspring having wrapped around the adjuster,.... in effect causing a much faster balance swing rate.
This is usually caused by a sharp jolt and i suppose it IS concievable your watch suffered another sharp jolt on the way to you from the service center giving you the same problem. The service center may not have given you the "full" story and opted to say it was running spot on. (which might have been true after the technician unwrapped the(probable)overcoil.
Magnatism and oil making it's way to the haispring could be the problem also,.....causing the haispring coils to stick together speeding thisgs drastically up as you deascribe.
......my bet is on the haispring overwrap however! Let us know if you get a detailed problem description once it's cured.

: I purchased an AT several months ago and it
: regularly ran +5 minutes fast a day. I sent
: it in to factory service center to be
: adjusted etc. and the repair personnel said
: the watch ran spot on when it left. A check
: with atomic clock shows last 24 hours it ran
: 9 1/2 minutes fast. I see several threads
: where patience is cautioned, but that was
: for much smaller time differentials.
: Is it possible that the watch suffered some
: electromagnetic field while in transit from
: repair center via FEDEX?
: Should I just suck it up, have to adjust the
: watch daily until it slows down?
: Have any of the learned members (Zowie, Keith,
: etc.) of this group heard of such a
: situation?
: I love my watch, but am very perplexed by its
: performance.
