The difference in depreciation between the auto and quartz is not really significant. Both in excellent condition can sell for 45-50% of their original RETAIL price.
But the smartest thing you can do is buy your SMP as a USED watch. That way, your investment is already at the depreciated/resale price level, so you have little to loose on reselling it again.
