Unfortunately That's True....

A sapphire crystal is an extremely hard substance, which is why it is nearly impossible to scratch. It rates a 9 on the Moh's Scale of Hardness, with Diamond being a 10. You can't polish out scratches from something this hard, and even if you could, you would risk shattering the crystal in the process from the tremendous amount of pressure that would need to be applied.

Just to be sure I checked several Swiss watch brand forums and spoke to a Swiss watchmaker. They all informed me that, if a sapphire crystal becomes scratched, it must be replaced. None of the major manufacturers (Omega, Rolex, Breitling, etc.) ever try to repair them.
