As you'll see in Derek's article, it all boils down to the type of person who will be wearing it. If he's looking solely for a watch that keeps great time and doesn't need to be reset when not worn for days at a time, then quartz is the way to go. However, if you want to give him a truly special, real mechanical timepiece that doesn't run on a battery, then an automatic is best. You really have to know the type of person you are buying for in order to make this decision.
