My GMT clasp (rubber diver's strap) was badly scratched from wearing it hunting and fishing - figured I couldn't make it any worse, so I poliched it with crocus cloth. It didn't take out the deeper scratches, but the ordinary wear marks disappeared, and the finish looks good.
Work slowly, in one direction only, and use a padded sanding block. I used a hardwood block with a 3/16 layer of smooth rubber gasket material.
