Yes, automatics have overwind protection. But...

I think it is the case with most things that if they are abused, you run the risk of breaking them. My comments regarding the manual winding were specifically targeted at the occasional winding in order to provide a full power reserve for the Automatic Winding Mechanism to maintain. There should be no reason to manually wind an Automatic on a daily basis if the watch is worn on a daily or even semi-daily basis. I often skip a day wearing a watch, then come back to it, and it doesn't run down on me.
