Q. Does the Seamaster/Speedmaster Logo Horse Have a name? It appears to be Hippocampus closely associated with Neptune in Roman Mythology. Can you confirm or deny this?
A. Dear Sir,
With reference to your above enquiry, we have indeed selected the “ seahorse “ (hippocampus ) since this sign reflects the idea of “ water-resistance “ for a watch. The name SEAMASTER dates back to 1948 when the first “ water-resistant “ watches were created, taking advantage of the special construction which had to be made for stainless steel cases, sea-water resistant , for the pilots of the RAF, from 1939-1950. We had then developped the first real “ water-resistant “ watch case and have kept this name until today for all “ sports “ watches, hence the medallion had been only chemically applied in about 1958-1960. The present embossed “ Seahorse “ is therefore visible outside of the Seamaster case backs after 1960.
