: My first really good watch was a Rolex. That
: was bought 20 years ago when a SS DateJust
: could still be had for $900. Oh how I wish I
: had splurged a little more then and bought a
: Submariner instead.
This may sound totally crazy, but the Submariner is one Rolex I absolutely hate, and I hate it for one reason - its date magnifier. It's just my opinion, of course, but I think it's a crime to take a beautiful precision timepiece and glue an ugly hump to the top of the crystal...kind of like putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. The look of the Submariner reminds me of the cheap watches my grandfather and his friends used to wear. They all needed that date magnifier because their vision was poor.
I find it interesting that Omega does not make any watches with a date magnifier, and neither do many other high end watch manufacturers. Even Rolex seems to have felt the need to eliminate the magnifier by creating the Sea Dweller, which was the one and only Rolex I have ever owned.
Am I being too harsh, or do most people hate the date magnifier?
