To auto wind or not to auto wind

I've heard of some people owning an automatic mechanical watch and after having left it in a drawer for over a decade, wind it up and discover that it still keeps reasonably accurate time.

So my question is this: does giving the watch movement long "rests" help extend the life of the components? Or is it better to keep the movement going contiguously, either by wearing it all the time or using an automatic watch winder?
