Lemania the Histroy

This is a page taken from Wristwatches by Gisbert L. Brunner and Christian Pfeiffer-Belli

Lemania

The young, Self-made Alfred Lugrin, who in 1884 opened a small workshop in Le Sentier to make chronographs, taught himself the watchmaking art. Because of lack of space he moved to the nearby town of L’Orient in 1886. It was here that stopwatches and chronographs of all types were produced as well as movement blanks with repeating work which were made for the first time using machine-tools.

In 1930, Lugrin’s son-in-law and successor Marius meylan, established the Lemania trade-name. In 1932, the company joined the SSIH group, which included the Omega and Tissot Brands. Under the new owners, the company was producing a wide range of different chronograph movements within a few years. One of them accompanied Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon in 1969.

In 1981, the Financially hit SSIH sold its Lemania shares to its management and other investors from outside the company. Since 1992 Nouvelle Lemania has belonged to investcorp, group Horologer Breguet. In September of 1999 the Breguet group was taken over by the Swatch group of Bienne.
