I'm not sure who told you such horror stories, but Breitling and Omega are directly comparable in terms of quality. I own both brands and though Omega is my favorite, I love my Breitling SuperOcean as well. The bracelet is heavy and strong, and the watch itself is thicker than the Omega Seamaster. Plus, it keeps superb time, losing about 10 seconds per month!!!
Keep in mind that I don't abuse my watches. I wear all of them with everything from shorts to a suit and tie. My dad, on the other hand, owns three Breitlings and he is very tough on watches. His Breitlings have all run flawlessly, as have his Omegas.
Both Omega and Breitling use heavily modified ETA movements in their watches, as opposed to Rolex who uses only in-house movements. I personally find Omegas to be a bit more elegant overall. Breitlings in general are larger and look more like an Omega on steroids. So, there are only a few Breitlings I can wear on my 6 3/4" wrist.
FYI...I use a separate authorized retailer for Breitlings that discounts 35% off MSRP, so e-mail me directly if you would like a referral.
