Have a look at the Candino Deep Reef, steel bracelet. It sells for about US$550 (The rubber band is approx. US$60 cheaper). It's really not bad, considering that it's water resistance is 300 meters, as opposed to 200 meters for the Mido. It's stainless steel is 316L, and it also has Sapphire crystal. I believe the automatic movement is basic Swiss ETA, but you won't get anything better for this price, unless you are willing to buy a quartz movement. The Marcello C Nettuno 3, is also pretty good for its price. It's also Swiss made, and it sells for around US$450.
There are some other brands, for example, Sandoz and Invicta that also use the basic automatic ETA 23824-2 ,movements, but none of these brands are Swiss made. Frankly, I think the overall quality Marcello C. watches are better therefore, it's worthwhile to spend the extra US$100 for the Marcello C's. The bottom line is that if you want an automatic Swiss made watch, you won't get a good one for less than US$450. Okay, I think I have run out of information for you. Good luck on your purchase, and do let me know what you have finally decided to purchase. Post a picture of it, if you can.
Common man
