I think the lemon is an occasional occurance, it just seems more pronounced because its reported here and other places in search of a fix, rant or griipe.
The Authorized Dealer I send referrals for will not send out a watch from his display case. It's actually more of a hassle for him. They come untouched from his vault, aside from him sizing the bracelet for a customer before he ships it out. He knows how particular we enthusiasts can be about the condition of a new watch, as opposed to a customer who wants the watch he sees in the display window. He tests many watches that come in on a watch winder to keep track of how they are doing in function and accuracy. He was especially vigilant in this with the caliber 33xx models that came through his shop. He will certainly perform that kind of testing if specifically asked to.
He also has a lot of turn over, so watches (for the most part) are not sitting around his shop for a long time. Most of the cal 33xx models (for instance) are sure to be more recent manufacture because he is frequently restocked, avoiding early manufacture pieces which may have uncorrected bugs.
I currently have 6 recent model Omega Certified Chronometers. None of them has been delivered outside of COSC spec. In fact, most of them are within 1 or 2 seconds.
Any watch that is delivered with a problem or DOA should be returned immediately and exchanged. The Dealer will just send it back and tell Omega that they sent him a defective watch. A good Dealer will offer to do this if needed, so you aren't stuck with a new watch that needs to be sent off for 6 weeks to Switzerland.
