Re: Definitive Speedmaster moon watch model number

Dell, this is from my previous post:

"There are only two models that that with any certainty qualify as true moon watches: the 105.003 and 105.012 both with the cal. 321 movement. It is thought by many that Aldrin wore a 145.012 but this cannot be confirmed as his watch has been lost.

Models prior to the 105.003 are generally referred to as "pre-moon watches". Models subsequent to the 105.012 (and perhaps the 145.012) would be "post-moon".

There is no evidence that the cal. 86x (now 186x) ever went to the moon. Although 86x and 186x watches are not moon watches in the true sense of the term, Speedmaster Professionals with these movements are flight certified by NASA for EVA activities. But to my knowledge, no display back Speedies have been flight certified, only steel backed."

So if you want a "for sure moon watch", consider a vintage 105.003 or a 105.012 like mine:

I hope this helps.

John
