I've heard rumors of this... And it does have to do with "glass or plastic" (if you're a Con-Air fan you'll know why I quoted that). Omega engraves a tiny "O" on it's hesalite crystal watches (Speedmaster Pro) but not on the rest of the Omega watch lines (including the Speedmasters with sapphire crystals).
I guess it's a anti-counterfieting measure. But I can't confirm my thoughts.
