Setting the date on an SMP

I just got my brand new SMP automatic today and am happy to say that it has lived up to all I ever expected from it (in the first 5 hrs!!). I do have a question though. The date is currently set to 12 and it is the 17th today. I have learned from reading most of your posts and the Seamaster FAQ that one should not change the date between +/-3 hrs of midnight. My question is at what time should I change the date so as not to damage the mechanism and still make sure that it rolls over close to midnight. Thank you in advance.
