First, congrats! I bought my first Omega, a SMP in June and it won't let anything else on my wrist.
If you're willing to set the date AND time, I'd advance the hours until you get to the next day, the 13th. Well into the next day, say, 5 or 6 (am). Then advance the date to the 16th. Then advance the hours until the 17th shows. This way, you can be sure if the hands are showing am or pm.
If you're weird about these things (as I am), hack the second hand to 12 (so you're right on the second), advance the minute hand fast a few minutes then BACK exactly into the oncoming minute. When your time source says it's exactly on the minute, push the crown in and you're set.
Hard to put in words. Hope this helps. Enjoy your SMP and enjoy life too.

: I just got my brand new SMP automaRe: Setting the date on an SMPtic today and
: am happy to say that it has lived up to all
: I ever expected from it (in the first 5
: hrs!!). I do have a question though. The
: date is currently set to 12 and it is the
: 17th today. I have learned from reading most
: of your posts and the Seamaster FAQ that one
: should not change the date between +/-3 hrs
: of midnight. My question is at what time
: should I change the date so as not to damage
: the mechanism and still make sure that it
: rolls over close to midnight. Thank you in
: advance.
