Nice thinking question, Sam. Thanks.
I suppose for me it wouldn't so much be "a" watch as a watch "lifestyle." When you wrote in response to my Omega Snowmaster post about your titanium, I got to thinking, "I can see my 2254.50 in that." So, I'd try things out for a while, probably cycle through them, keeping only a few "core" pieces.
Beyond that, I think I'd be interested in pieces w/ histories. Maybe a 105.012 c321 "moon" watch like Armstrong wore (altho I doubt that I'd ever wear it much in practical use). President Kennedy's 1961 inauguration Omega recently went up for auction, so that might be of interest (as opposed to the Timex that President Bush supposedly wears now in The White House). George Lazenby's Rolex from On Her Majesty's Secret Service was recently up for sale (for all I know, still is). That wouldn't interest me, but the original Live and Let Die Rolex, with modifications, also up for sale somewhere, would. Maybe same era versions of the Dr. No and Goldfinger watches.
As I've written in previous Posts where our paths have crossed, I tend to be more of a watch wearer than a guy who lines drawers. That doesn't mean I wouldn't "retire" a watch at some point in favor of a new one. But in order to come in my door, I think it would stil lhave to be "prepared for duty" -- regardless of my tax status.
