Question No.2 for you guys.
I get a lot of customers who, once I've explained that a watch is not water resistant, they say; "But it's okay to shower with." A statement, not a question. I tell them( as I raise my arm and show them my Bond SMP) that I wouldn't shower with a dive watch on an everyday basis.
True or false?
I say that it's okay to wear it in the shower once every few weeks if they want to wash any dirt and grime out from between the bracelet links, but that should be it.
True or false?
One or two customers have told me that they never take their watch off and that they shower with them on every day without any problem.
Are there any of you out there who do the same, and have you ever had any trouble with water getting into your watch?
One repairer I spoke to told me that if you showered with a dive watch on, it would take less than a year for water to get in because of soaps and shampoos weakening the rubber seals around the crowns.
True or false?
My 'theory' has always been that the TEMPERATURE of the water is the real threat because the watch case is subjected to a rapid increase in temperature whilst under water and, over time, this might cause the metal to expand and contract to the point where the case's water-tightness is compromised. Don't flame me over this one, gang, 'cos personally, I don't believe that theory either, even though I came up with it.
But it will do until a better one comes along.
Like I posted with my first question the other day, the web is full of info regarding water resistance, but I would rather hear from watch owners and repairers.
Anyway, I'd be curious to hear some of your stories, be they heroic (where the watch went beyond your expectations) or horrific (where the crystal fogged up and you were later presented with some astronomical quote for repair.)
Once again, open to all brands, but I'd like to hear what some Seamaster owners have to report. I have to say that after five years with my Bond SMP, I have nothing but praise for that watch...but as a sales consultant, I'm not exactly living on the edge.
