The "path" is going to differ depending upon the person, but I love your question about "which" and for me it goes something like this.
The 2531.80 was a "no choice" for me. Bond's watch, my introduction to Omega, so it was either the 2541.80 or the one I got, and automatic chronometer won out. Where it currently sits is my "special occasion watch, altho I wouldn't hesitate to wrist it (notice how I created a whole new verb out of "wrist"?) as a general substitute for the 2254.50 that I wear every day.
The next step for me is to relegate the 2254.50 to "tool" status, when I'm out on my kayak or even rougher situations for my bike. Maybe a vacation watch, where the versatility comes into play (rough day time, more formal dress for dinner -- but packing only one watch for security, among other reasons). It's what Omega claims to be in terms of performance, so I feel like it would be hypocritical of me to own something like a Marathon SAR for this purpose.
The watch that becomes my "every day," then, would be the Planet Ocean. I like that the movement is different from the 1120, and I guess that is high on my list. Keep w/ the bezel, as I noted before. I'm leaning orange because my job lends itself to less formality, in favor of more approachability (I'm a divorce mediator). And since I already have black, why not change if I can get away with it?
Somewhere in that mix is another move, which would be to put the 2254.50 on either a Bond-style bracelet or a NATO strap. Sort of an homage to the Goldfinger Rolex, only what I know Bond would really have worn (if available).
Everyone's got their sort of "conservative" base, Rob, so that will probably instruct your moves more than anything else. On the job. Durability. Versatility. My bezel fetish, I guess.
Now that I've protected the 2254.50 flank on your question, I hope others will weigh in as well. Good luck!
