Re: c.3301 vs c.1164
In Response To: c.3301 vs c.1164 ()

: Gentlemen: I take it from you reply that you do
: not think highly of all the 77XXs. I am
: considering returning a new seamaster
: 2294.52.00 for another seamaster I have
: wanted for some time...the 2296.80.00. Both
: watches look similar however the movement in
: the 229452 is a c.3301 and the movement of
: the 229680 is the c.1154/64 (based on
: Valjoux 7750). Which watch has the better
: quality movement? Also, speaking as a
: collector which watch would you rather have?
: I think I might be asking the same question
: but I am very interested to hear your
: thoughts.

I think Chuck has hit the nail on the head with his comments. If I had a choice between a Valjoux 7750 based movement or the Piguet movement in the 33xx series, I would choose the 33xx ONLY if I knew it was not defective and would function as it was supposed to.

I appreciate the higher attention to detail and quality of workmanship that goes into the Piguet movement, but none of that means much if the watch doesn't work. I'm not a fan of the way the Valjoux 7750 based movements feel compared to the Piguet, but you can't deny that the 7750 has been a tried and true movement that has served well in many watches over the years. It isn't the most prestigious or most complex movement, but it does work as it's supposed to.

So, I guess it comes down to whether you want to take a gamble on the series 33xx movements and hope that Omega has finally eliminated the problems, or buy a less expensive Valjoux 7750 based movement that has a far better reiability record.
