..."but in another country" sounds like it could have been "trans shipped" to a Gray Market dealer. That's very much where gray market dealers get their stock. Is the Serial Number intact on the back of the 7:00 lug? If it's not there, it's an indication that it was sold to a gray market dealer in the first place, though the opposite is not true, some gray market dealers (more accurately the Authorized Dealers who sell to them) keep the serial number intact.
Anyways, this is all beside the point. I don't think there's much chance he can get a replacement card, but he can always try. It would only have one more year on it anyway.
