A quartz watch can have a sweep second hand, but it is harder to make a quartz watch movement do that without reducing the battery life noticably.

A battery powers a quartz watch -- it is essentially a small electric clock.
An automatic is mechanical watch, powered by tension stored in a wound spring. The automatic simply uses a moving weight to 'wind' the watch while you wear it and move around.
