you are nearly correct, the VAT tax rate is 17.5 % , has been since 1991 i think.
the trouble with UK customs is that is is a little like playing russian roulette. they dont check every single parcel for import tax, and i have ordered upwards of 30 items from the states over the last couple of years. the last parcel was the time i got stung for the tax, and it just didnt make the purchase worthwhile once i had paid the tax in order for customs to release my parcel.
and knowing my luck, if i was to order an expensive watch, you could guarantee that the parcel would get stopped and i would have to pay out lots of tax !

what i may do with the referral for the dealer in newyork, is see how much the saving is, and if it is enough to cover the air fair and a night in hotel then i may make a weekend of it and come over to the states and collect it in person.... hmm,,, ideas ideas ....!
