Funny you should ask if anyone remembers what Dalton wore -- for two reasons.
First, in interviews at the time, he was absolutely over the top in terms of how vocal he became in "being true to the original Fleming" (as if there are "King James," "NIV," and "Good News" versions of James Bond stories! ... or maybe the man's works should be defered to vis-a-vis "original intent," sorta like The US Constitution!). So, of course, Timothy Dalton wore a Rolex.
Second, as I've done research on "Bond watches," I find, with ironic consistency, folks can't seem to identify which Rolex Dalton wore! So: Obsessed w/ the original, but utterly unmemorable.
(Don't get me wrong: Both scripts were good, and I would have enjoyed seeing Pierce Brosnan do The Living Daylights.)
As to the orange Planet Ocean, have you noticed all the coverage in current watch magazines for the very orange "Dirk Pitt Doxa"? To make sure all their bases were covered, I guess the character in Sahara wore almost every version, so all could be sold as "authentic."
Believe me: I've watched how the higher-ups at EON/Danjac (Bond producers) work, and they are very aware of such things, and are very much followers.
As to our brand being "overlooked" -- let's all of us here make sure that doesn't happen!
Last word -- GREAT PHOTO. Thanks for sharing it, John.
